Summer Driving Tips

I grew up in the Hartford, CT area and was always a fan of WTIC-AM, especially when Bob Steele was the host of the morning show. Jim MacPherson hosts a car-care radio show on WTIC and offers up these tips for getting your summer ride into gear.

1. Cooling system -- When your engine is cold, check your coolant and make sure your radiator fins have not been clogged by dirt or debris. Be sure to keep fingers away from the electric cooling fan while doing this and never remove the radiator cap if the engine is warm. In addition to coolant, keep an eye on the oil level and the fluids for power steering, brakes and transmission.

2. Temperature Gauge -- If your temperature gauge moves into the red zone or the high temperature warning light goes on, pull over to a safe location and stop your engine. Do not open the radiator cap. Driving a car while the engine is overheated can cause serious damage.

3. Oil -- When the temperatures are high, you need oil that provides extra protection for your engine. A fully synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 is a good choice; it’s designed to protect your engine at any temperature and provides fuel economy benefits. Fuel economy grades provide excellent fuel savings compared to higher viscosity grade oils. (For more information about Mobil 1, go to www.mobiloil.com.)

4. Belts and hoses -- Inspect all belts and hoses, looking for signs of wear such as blistering or cracks in the rubber. If they show signs of wear, replace them now.

5. Tires -- In high heat, under-inflated tires are more likely to blow out. Once a month, check the pressure of all tires. To find the correct pressure rating for your vehicle, look inside the driver’s doorframe or your owner’s manual.

6. Windshield wipers -- The rubber on your wiper blades is susceptible to the summer heat. Examine your blades, and if they show signs of wear, invest in a new set.

7. Battery -- Hot weather can shorten the life of your vehicle’s battery. Inspect the batteries and battery cables for corrosion, cracks and dirt. Many service centers can check the condition of the battery and charging system. If the battery is weak, replace it.

8. Lights -- Check your headlights on low and high beam, as well as your brake lights, turn signals, side marker lights and emergency flashers. If you’re towing anything, check your connections to ensure your trailer lights are working properly.

9. Vehicle Exterior -- Wash your vehicle regularly to preserve the finish. After it has dried, apply a coat of wax to the exterior to protect the surface.

10. Emergencies -- Keep an emergency kit in your trunk with some basic items in case your vehicle breaks down. Be sure to include a quart of oil, a gallon of drinking water, jumper cables, windshield washer fluid, basic tools, gloves, a flashlight with some spare batteries and a first aid kit.

TRANSFORMERS - Movie, Going To Be A Huge Hit

The TRANSFORMER movie rolls into theaters on July 3rd and my sense is that it will have a huge opening. Dreamworks and Paramount Pictures should see a very strong demand for the movie. Why? Nothing other than the fact that TRANSFOMERS have millions of fans worldwide. In fact, starting today, BOTCON kicks off in the home state of Hasbro (makers of TRANSFORMERS), Rhode Island. The convention will be held at the Rhode Island Convention Center in Providence, Rhode Island. You can find out more at this site. Nice way to kick off the 4th of July break. Looks like plenty of action and innovative special effects. 8111024cb31b_main200

iPhone Robbery? Let's hope not.

Call me paranoid, but lets look back at the XBox and PS3 frenzy. When they were made available, people waited in long lines for the opportunity to be the first to snag one of these hot items. Stories then surfaced about how the game consoles were being ripped out of peoples hands causing a very dangerous situation in many cases. Now we have the iPhone. I sure hope that Apple and AT&T provide good security for these new owners as they make their way out of the store with a fresh iPhone in their hands. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea to also have strong security in the store.

Learn More About The OLPC

Dan Bricklin did a great job recently recording both a podcast and video of our recent Massachusetts Technology Leadership Council meeting for the Open Source Cluster. Here is a link to the video about the OLPC by some of the members of the OLPC team. (One Laptop Per Child) I think you will enjoy the video. Thanks Dan.

This Watch Gets The "Cool Factor" Award

Triaxvapor300 I'm a watch fanatic and have been on the hunt for my next cool watch. I only wear two pieces of "jewelry" if you will. My wedding ring and my watch. So, when Nike came out with their Triax Vapor 300 - Super (sounds like a sophisticated military weapon), I couldn't resist. The watch has a very large display making it much easier to read in various environments. It is made of aircraft aluminum and curved glass and uses, as I understand, the LCD display from the folks at SoftPixel. Nice job Nike. Sleek, an eye catcher and very, very functional.

Inflatable Domes

Dome Elumenati is a producer of inflatable domes along with projectors and other products that enable museums, planetariums and other group gathering places to showcase a variety of visualizations in a very cool way. Companies like Disney and Cirque du Coleil are leveraging these domes in a variety of ways. I sense that in the future, we will be able to go to Walmart and buy a personal inflatable dome for the backyard to watch Back To The Future - Part 10.
